Canon Powershot D20 Compact Waterproof Camera

Canon Powershot D20 Compact Waterproof Camera

The Canon PowerShot D20 has been designed for the outdoor sports market in mind. The camera is expected to be waterproof down to 10m in depth, shockproof from drops of 1.5m in height, freezeproof down to -10C, and has been environmentally sealed against sand and dust.

Canon Powershot D20

The new Canon D20 is the company’s toughest rugged compact camera to date, boasting a waterproof, shock-proof and freezeproof chassis. Although Canon has not stretched the D20?s toughness limits, we can tell you that the camera has undergone a major design overhaul, apparently by Picasso. The Canon PowerShot D20 will shoot 1080p HD video underwater, has a 5x optical zoom lens, GPS and new shooting modes.

The PowerShot D20 features a 28mm wide-angle lens, with 5x zoom and Intelligent IS which automatically analyses the scene and selects the optimum settings for the optical Image Stabilizer from seven different modes. GPS is built-in and you can shoot Full HD 1080p movies quickly and easily from the dedicated Movie Record button. The Smart Auto feature detects 32 different scenes and seven Creative filters are available.

It also features Active Display technology, which Canon claims will allow users to control some of the camera functions by tapping the camera body, which we’re guessing will come in handy when wearing thick and padded gloves. It will also sport an underwater macro mode and a built-in GPS Logger feature that lets the photographer tag images with location data, thus allowing users to track their movements with the Map Utility.

The D20 packs a GPS alongside its 12.1-megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor. Lens-wise, there’s 5x optical zoom, which opens up to 28mm wide angle. Tough credentials include waterproofing up to 10 metres, freeze proofing to -10 degrees Celcius and shock proofing to 1.5 metres. Waterproofing is increased to 40 metres with the optional case. From the looks of it, the design team hasn’t really improved the external appearance of the D20, opting for a less bulbous look than the D10, but it’s still reasonably painful on the eye.

The D20 is waterproof, shock-proof, and freeze-proof digital camera with a 5x optical zoom lens and Canon’s own HS system for low-light photography. With a practical 28-140mm zoom lens, the Canon D20 has a good zoom range for basic outdoor photography. Its 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor works in conjunction with its DIGIC 4 processor to deliver images with low noise and good overall quality.
